On March 17, community members gathered at Saint Mark’s Cathedral for a short, outdoor gathering to celebrate the reuniting of Jose Robles with his family after 20 months of detention at the Northwest Detention Center. This gathering also marked Jaime Rubio’s two-year anniversary of being in sanctuary at Saint Mark’s, as he continues to work toward a legal remedy.
Speakers at this event included Jose Robles, Jaime Rubio, The Very Rev. Steven L. Thomason (Dean and Rector, Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral), The Rev. Canon Nancy Ross (Canon for Cathedral Relations, Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral), The Rev. Joanne Engquist (Lead Pastor, Gethsemane Lutheran Church), and Michael Ramos (Executive Director,) Church Council of Greater Seattle.
Jose had been in sanctuary at Gethsemane Lutheran Church for just over a year prior to being detained, and remains in the process of seeking approval for a U-Visa.
This event was covered by local media, including KIRO-7 (story includes video) and KUOW (audio available). The event was co-hosted by Saint Mark’s, Gethsemane Lutheran, and the Church Council of Greater Seattle.
