The Church Council of Greater Seattle shares our profound grief, sorrow and outrage upon hearing of the deadly massacre at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our hearts break at the horrific attack and murder of 49 Muslims taking part in Friday prayers. Most compassionate God, we raise our prayers and cries on behalf of the victims, all who are wounded, worshippers, loved ones and families!

As congregations, people of faith and good will, we denounce this violent, racist, reprehensible and evil act. We mourn with the Muslim community and people of New Zealand and share our love for our Muslim siblings in our state and nation. We say clearly and vociferously that hate has no place in our communities and society. We decry all attacks on religious houses of worship and the ideologies and prejudices that foment acts of violent terror. We call for confronting fear and hate-mongering when it occurs. We plead for understanding of the common humanity that binds us all together. We invite reflection and action to build relationships with our Muslim neighbors and across religious lines and to be people who commit to โ€œact justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our Godโ€ on the road ahead toward beloved community.

Friends, the current ask from our Muslim siblings with whom we are in relationship is to stand up against hate, to hold people, from politicians to news pundits, accountable for their hateful rhetoric and to actively advocate for a world free of hate.” There will be events in the coming days. In the meantime, you can download #WeStandWithMuslimNeighbors signs and display them.ย
