Congresswoman-Elect Pramila Jayapal will join Governor Jay Inslee, King County Executive Dow Constantine and local leaders to hold a press conference to declare Washington a hate free state.
Last month, vandals attempted to destroy the sign outside of the mosque Redmond in a “clear act of hate,” according to the president of the Muslim Association of Puget Sound. This is not an isolated incident. This month, the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Council on American Islamic Relations have reported a dangerous rise in hate crimes following the November election. Hate incidents have also been reported against LGBTQ and Jewish communities, as well as increased violent speech against women and people of color. In the wake of recent events, we strongly believe it is our moral obligation to continue to fight injustice and policies rooted in racism, condemn hateful rhetoric, hate crimes and hate threats against our fellow residents.
As happened after 9/11, this press conference will bring together elected officials, community, union and faith leaders along with local residents to denounce the dangerous uptick in hate crimes, declare Washington a hate free state, and review the ways in which Washington state will continue to be a leader in protecting the rights of all people.
