Washington State’s eviction moratorium is set to expire on October 15th.

Since it was put in place, it has protected hundreds of thousands of Washington households from facing homelessness. The expiration would result in more than 140,000 households in Washington State facing eviction during the deadliest public health and economic crises our state and country have seen. The most recent toll of deaths from COVID-19 in America has surpassed 200,000. And the economic downturn has hit low and fixed income renter households the hardest, especially Black, Latinx and other households of color.
As the Resident Action Project Community Organizer, I work with hundreds of folks who were already on the frontlines of our state’s housing crisis before COVID-19 hit. But since, many have reported lost or diminished wages and echo a fear shared by many thousands in Washington: “Will I be homeless next month?” Even for folks who are currently able to pay rent, many are close to falling behind and are only hanging on by a thread.
We expect a massive eviction crisis on the horizon as we inch closer and closer to the October 15 eviction moratorium expiration. It’s so tough knowing that so many people are being pushed to the limits of their anxiety and fear of what homelessness would bring, especially as the cold and wet fall season has set in.
The only way our state is going to avoid another massive wave of homelessness is by keeping the state moratorium in place, without any new loopholes. Longer term, our lawmakers need to take action to protect renters and ensure resources like rental and debt assistance are made available at the levels needed in every community. But in the meantime, we must ensure that no one else becomes homeless because of COIVD-19 and economic recession.


Decision makers need to hear from you! Landlords who want to evict tenants are speaking up. Will you? Continued pressure is needed to raise the alarm bells – the moratorium must continue and must not be weakened in order to prevent a massive increase in homelessness.
Please raise your voice by sending an email today and also post on social media that you want the moratorium to continue. And while the federal CDC has instituted a moratorium until the end of the year, THAT moratorium will not protect tenants nearly as much as our statewide eviction moratorium already does. Tenants in states with only the federal moratorium are still losing their homes – Washington needs to keep our state moratorium in place.
Please call on Governor Inslee and state lawmakers today – ask them to extend the state’s eviction moratorium through March 2021.
This extended timeline will give the Legislature the opportunity to create and vote on a longer-term solution for housing stability during this era of COVID-19 and the economic recession.
The state moratorium has worked to keep hundreds of thousands of people safely housed. And Washington’s tenant households are faring better than tenant households in other states – all thanks to Governor Inslee’s moratorium.
However, if we don’t speak up, it is possible that the moratorium will be lifted or weakened with loopholes that will result in evictions across the state.
